Tunes & Tales
When Space Boy Visited Heliopolis

In March’s instalment of Tunes & Tales Fireside Chats, Heliopolis was transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity and community as we hosted a memorable event, a dynamic fundraiser for the independent film project, Space Boy. The night was dedicated to shining a spotlight on the filmmakers’ journey—an exploration of the creative challenges, innovative storytelling, and the sheer passion that fuels Calgary’s thriving arts scene.

The chat delved into the challenges of crafting a futuristic narrative set against a retro 1980s backdrop, to the financial restraints facing young and upcoming talents. But as is the tradition of Heliopolis, the chat was warmed by a lot of laughter, some IYKYK stories, and serious art.

In conversation with the creative mind behind Space Boy North Warhurst, Executive Producer Lance Smith, Executive Producer Mike Migliara, Producer and Sound Director Morgan McLaren, and Producer Victoria Givlin, guests were treated to insights into the world of film and the broader impact indie cinema has on Calgary’s local culture.

The artistic evening extended to display artwork from other local artists. Guests explored the striking artwork by 40-year-old painter Mouhammed Badr, marveled at the stunning work of Maya Corona, and were captivated by the custom-designed jewelry by Marlow Marshal.

These exhibitions, alongside the lively conversation and the artistry of the music performance by Tim the Pianist were just the perfect blend for an unforgettable night.
